ServicesInformation and Referral The Epilepsy Foundation of Southeast Louisiana provides:
Short term counseling provides assistance in coping with the initial diagnosis of a seizure disorder, temporary adjustment difficulties, and stress management. Efforts are directed toward promoting the healthy functioning of persons with epilepsy in accordance with their own goals and reaching their potential. Support groups are conducted by the Epilepsy Foundation for adults, women, and teenagers with epilepsy, as well as for parents of children with epilepsy. These groups provide a setting for people concerned with epilepsy to discuss day-to-day issues involving society, friends and family, and to promote a greater understanding of epilepsy through educational topics such as employment, medicines, available community resources, and a wide range of other issues which affect their lives. For information regarding support group times and locations, see Support Groups. Speakers, films, printed materials, and exhibits are available for professional groups, school audiences, and the general public. Seizure recognition instruction and contemporary first aid training are provided for those who have an interest in epilepsy, who come into contact with the general public or work with individuals who have epilepsy. Advocacy services are aimed at helping individuals with epilepsy secure needed services and rights guaranteed by law. Issues such as employment discrimination, problems with governmental service delivery, and Social Security disability denial are addressed through information and referral. The Epilepsy Foundation assists eligible persons to obtain their medicines at no charge through various pharmaceutical company programs. Medication identification bracelets may also be ordered at a reduced cost. The Foundation has a quarterly newsletter that provides information on epilepsy and community events throughout the state.
